Dinosaur National Monument
Location: Near Vernal, Utah
Located on the border of Colorado and Utah, near the town of Vernal, Utah, Dinosaur National Monument is, as the name implies, a US National Monument. It was proclaimed as such by then US President, Woodrow Wilson, in 1915. The area is famous for its many fossil beds. Probably the Monument's best known feature is the "Dinosaur Wall", which is located within the Dinosaur Quarry Visitor Center. The Dinosaur Wall is a steep layer of rock that contains numerous dinosaur fossils. However, there have been structural problems with the building, and as a result, at the time of writing this article (May 2008), the Visitor Center is closed indefinitely. The good news is however that visitors can still see some fossil displays which have been set up in a Temporary Visitor Center. Official Web Site: |
